Foods That Detox The Body

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Herbs, Apple, Grape juice, Acai berry- what kind of noises do they create in you. The noises are perhaps of peace and harmony to the body and they are noises you can’t complain about either. We live in a fast spinning world; time has turned us into people running for most of our lives. This unhealthy pace brings us to the doors of many diseases; our metabolism goes for an unhealthy toss. Our body becomes full of toxin and detoxification is the only option left with us.

Thankfully there are many natural foods that help a body in detoxifying. Let’s read into their benefits. Green leafy vegetables are our greatest friends in the pursuit. They help us in detoxifying the liver. They have great chlorophyll content and can be had in diverse forms; raw, juiced, in gravy and many other forms. Since olden times this one has been the favorite with most people having a toxic build-up in their body.

Garlic can be combined with anything. They can be put in salads and served with spread; they are extremely beneficial for the heart and also flush out wastes from liver by stimulating its enzymes. Similarly water crass can be added to salads and various soups; they make excess water pass through urine and hence flush away toxic concentration in the body.

Lemons are an all time favorite. The raging case in its favor is its ability to convert toxins into water-soluble components. This way it is easy to get them flushed out of the system. Green tea has great detoxifying effect, it is an antioxidant known for washing out toxin concentration. An added advantage is the fact that it suppresses appetite, thus helping fight obesity.

Sesame seeds have always been able to shelter liver cells from any undue harm from alcohol. Tahini is super sesame seeds fighting chemical imbalance and toxin build-up. Cabbage is another favorite helping stimulate both the liver enzymes enabling detoxification.

Broccoli is a part of diet used for weight reduction along with black beans, at the same time they pack a real punch in helping detoxify the body from toxins, these activate enzymes in our body which fight cancer. Psyllium is also used as a drug. It’s a plant which has lavish spread of fiber readily soluble in water. It helps mitigate cholesterol levels thereby powering heart valves. It is also a panacea for colon infection. They come as a fortification in bran buds.

Who can ever forget the role of fruits as natural cleanser? They are rich in antioxidant, vitamins (fruits rich inn vitamin C work best) and healthy pulp. Grape juice, apple, lemons, and others were always known to have bountiful effect but we have also today risen to the pleasant call of Acai Berry, a purple fruit from jungles of Brazil and Peru. It has high quantity of unsaturated fat and healthy pulp which makes detoxification very easy for the body.

With toxin build-up, the body gives a feeling of carrying another body inside it. These detoxifying measures help it feel lighter. The process is simple, it is explained above and it results in heightening the metabolism. Rest the body does by itself. Detox your body today for a healthier you.

Drink Lemon Juice Everyday (no more than 1 lemon per day)

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

Now drinking lemon juice for acne throughout the day has become a habit for me. I used to drink soda (soft drinks) all day, but that really didn’t help my acne. So if you’re in the same situation I was a few years ago, drinking two cans of pop every day, then this might be the most important thing you read all year.

Now I replaced that with water bottles. And although that helped, it didn’t quite clear my acne.

Then I discovered that mixing fresh lemon juice with water really helps a lot. In fact, if you do only one thing, I would recommend the acne lemon juice.

1. In the morning, I wake up, splash a bit of water on my face and then I go and cut up a whole lemon in half.
2. After that, I juice the lemon using a cheap fruit juicer, one that’s going to separate the juice from the pulp and seeds.
3. Then, I open up a water bottle and take a healthy gulp, so that there’s room to mix the lemon juice.
4. Afterwards, I mix in the lemon juice with the water and shake it just a bit.

A little more details on my lemon water for acne routine

There we go; the lemon juice is ready to go for the rest of the day. Actually, I usually end up drinking it all within 1-2 hours, which is fine, there’s no need to extend it throughout the day. When I first started doing this, it was actually difficult to gulp down that much lemon, so what I did was use half a lemon per day, and I kept the other side for the next. After a while though, I noticed better results using the whole lemon, and the taste was actually enjoyable, so I now do a complete lemon per day.

Note: Usually after drinking lemon water, I noticed that my teeth are a bit more sensitive (makes sense since it’s slightly a slightly acidic drink) so what I do is I brush my teeth about 30-60 min after taking the lemon water. Sometimes I forget, or I just eat food and it seems to have the same effect, but I don’t want to have any cavities so I make sure to take care of my teeth! Some people suggested that I could drink it with a straw… I guess that could work too. Also, I never take more than 1 lemon per day; it’s apparently not good to take too much.

UPDATE: Do not take more than 1 lemon per day, I usually do 1 lemon per day for 7 days and then I go into a ‘maintenance dose’ of 1 lemon every 2-3 days. Taking more than this can cause side effects.

10 Top Tips For Healthy Liver

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Your liver has many functions; stores certain vitamins, minerals and sugars for use as fuel, cleanses/filters the toxins out of your blood and controls the production/excretion of cholesterol. Your overall health and vitality, to a great extent, depends upon the health of your liver. The thousands of enzyme systems that control virtually every body activity are created there. If your liver fails to create even one of these enzymes, overall body function is impaired, creating greater metabolic stress on your body. THE LYMPH composed of
Lymph fluid consists of; The ’tissue fluid’ in which all of our cells are bathed, and the fluid within the ‘lymph vessels’. These are ‘blood vessel’ like tubes, which connect the lymph glands of the body. The Lymphatic System is also called the Immune System.

Modern lifestyles can overstress your liver. Alcohol, tobacco, environmental pollutants, food additives, agricultural pesticides, popular cosmetic ingredients, common household products, stress, pharmaceutical and OTC (over-the-counter) drugs (including oral contraceptives
and caffeine), gallstones, home repair materials, artist materials, garden chemicals and building materials can all kill liver cells.

Symptoms of liver imbalance include headaches, bruising easily, anxiety, depression, confusion, fatigue, jaundice, impaired libido (sex drive) and mental function, food allergies, multiple chemical sensitivities and PMS, as well as conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease. When your liver is damaged it cannot remove toxins, which then build up in your blood and eventually, your brain.

Try the following tips for a healthy liver and lymph:

1. Avoid any foods of which you suspect you may be intolerant: They will produce toxins in the gut that can cause stress to the detoxification mechanisms. Bacteria, viruses, too much alcohol, coffee and other caffeine-containing drinks, smoking and the medicines that have powerful effects on the liver, stomach and other parts of the body can prove toxic Chew your food well to help release the enzymes that aid digestion.

2. Consume plenty of foods containing: Consume plenty of foods containing folate, flavonoids, magnesium, iron, sulphate and selenium and B-vitamins 2,3,6 and 12, since toxicity in the body can be caused by deficiency of the nutrients that the liver needs for detoxification as much as by exposure to toxins. Think along the lines of salads, beans, fresh juices, stir-fries cooked in a little good-quality olive oil, nuts, seeds, yoghurt (full-fat is fine). Steaming is a quick and healthy way of cooking vegetables, and the only vegetables to avoid are potatoes. Aim for a diet build on complex carbohydrates (brown rice), lean protein (beans, lentils, eggs, chicken, fish and a little lean red meat) and organic fruits & vegetables.

3. Cut down on stimulants: such as tea and coffee, and depressants such as smoking & alcohol. Aim at drinking at least 2.5 litres of water a day.

4. Eat foods rich in antioxidants: Which aid the natural detox mechanisms like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, and Brussels sprouts and Soybean products. Nutrients that enhance our immune system are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, the B-vitamins, Zinc and Magnesium. These nutrients are either potent anti-oxidants capable of stopping the free-radical cascade of tissue damage or are involved in the enzymes that help detoxify damaging chemicals.

5. Take a daily does of Echinacea , milk thistle or dandelion root: (as tablets, tincture or teas)  all herbs with a long  established reputation as blood cleansers and skin tonics. The usual recommended dose for milk thistle is 350mg three times a day for a couple of weeks.

6. Don’t use antibiotics or antacids unless absolutely necessary: Antibiotics can destroy the useful bacteria in the gut that eliminate toxins; antacids decrease the natural acidity that is necessary for complete digestion.

7. Take a dose of activated charcoal twice a week: This is a medical form of charcoal with the capacity to absorb whatever molecules it encounters, including toxins. Don’t take it with food or medicines though, or it will absorb them.

8. Take some gentle exercise: too, which increases lymph activity within the body, causing you to sweat and generate more urine, encouraging liver activity and stimulating the gut to get rid of waste products, all of which can help to detoxify your body. Gentle exercise is the key, however, because although you’ll find walking, swimming and cycling beneficial, you can really feel out of sorts when your body starts cleansing itself, and strenuous exercise will just make you feel worse. Wind up the exercise routine by carrying out deep breathing to use the Lungs more fully, this will get more oxygen into the blood, remove waste products from the blood - especially carbon dioxide - more quickly; and help to speed up the circulation of the blood.

9. Avoid excess of salt & sugar: Instead of excess salt use fresh herbs, pepper, chillies and lemon juice to enhance the flavour of food. Too much sugar isn’t healthy for anyone but especially those with an impaired immune system.

10. Laugh, Rest and feel good!: One more really good way to boost your immune system and it’s free. Laugh, Rest and feel good! A depressed mind can cause a depressed body. Laughter actually increases production of an antibody that is responsible for our first line of defense against bacterial infections. Laughter, lovemaking and exercise are the best medicine of all!

Over time, the health of the liver and lymph may be restored. Taking beneficial herbs regularly and following a detoxification process can help to provide protection to either the sick or healthy liver during the course of daily life. This stabilizes cell membranes and encourages the regeneration of liver cells destroyed during their normal functions.

An Intensive Cleanse Using Maple Syrup, Lemon Juice, and Cayenne

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Cleansing is necessary to keep our bodies functioning at their best. Pollution from the environment, oxidative stress, and additives (pesticides, chemical colors and flavorings) in our water and food are stored in organs and fatty tissue and build up in our bodies over time. Cleansing this toxic load can help to boost the immune system, improve vitality, get rid of headaches, allergies, fatigue, pain, arthritis and other symptoms, and can result in substantial weight loss. One of the most powerful dietary cleanses is the Lemon Cleanse or Master Cleanse.

Where the Lemon Cleanse Began

The lemon cleanse was developed by Stanley Burroughs and is laid out in his 1976 book, Healing for the Age of Enlightenment. The book addresses several unconventional aspects of health care, including Vita Flex reflexology, color therapy, and the lemon cleanse. A smaller book by Burroughs, The Master Cleanser, covers only the cleanse.

Despite the wealth of information about the master cleanse that is available on the internet and by word of mouth, it is advisable to read one of these books before attempting the lemon cleanse to get the details right and avoid adverse effects.

What is the Master Cleanse?

The master cleanse consists of 6 to 12 glasses a day of:

* juice of 1/2 a lemon
* 2 tbsp maple syrup
* 1/10 tsp cayenne pepper (or less, to taste)
* 8 oz water

This protocol is used for at least ten days, although the cleanse may be followed for up to a month. The cleanse is completed when white buildup on the tongue fades and it appears pink again (showing all candida is gone).

Food is not consumed during the cleanse; instead, a glass or two of the “lemonade” mixture is consumed whenever hungry. A laxative tea is also used during the cleanse.

Special protocols are laid out for coming off of the master cleanse which should be followed completely.

Why Lemons?

Lemons are one of the best foods for the human body. They provide vitamins and minerals as well as making the body more alkaline and helping to cleanse.

Organic lemons are preferable for the cleanse.

Why Maple Syrup?

Maple syrup is one of the few unprocessed good sugars that provide micronutrients as well as calories to the body. It is high in minerals including zinc and manganese. For the Master Cleanse, Burroughs recommends grade B because it contains more minerals than the lighter grades of maple syrup. It is also less likely than grade A (light) syrup to contain formaldehyde.

If you prefer, agave may be substituted for maple syrup in the master cleanse.

Is the Master Cleanse a Fast or a Starvation Diet?

No.

The master cleanse is more gentle on the body than a fast. Most cleansing fasts leave a person incapacitated or in bed for their duration. On the master cleanse, the only inconvenience is making sure to have ready access to the ingredients. Many people report high energy levels and productivity even during the cleanse.

Maple syrup provides for the body’s caloric needs even as the lemon, cayenne, and high water intake encourage toxins and buildup to leave the body. Minerals and vitamins are provided by the mineral-rich maple syrup and lemon juice (which is high in vitamin C and other nutrients). The master cleanse is not intended to be used permanently, but it is completely safe in the short term provided the directions are closely followed.

The Primary Goal of a Cleanse Is Not Usually to Lose Weight…

…but substantial weight loss can be one result.

If you don’t want to lose weight or find you are losing weight too quickly, add more maple syrup to each glass of “lemonade” or increase your intake in glasses per day.

The master cleanse is not for everyone. Please read Burroughs’ book and consult with an expert before beginning the cleanse.

5-Step Detox to Revitalize You

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Your body is naturally equipped with a self-cleaning process. But too much sugar, caffeine, processed foods, stress, and too little exercise can slow the body’s natural detox function to a slow pace. And then your body can’t clean itself when it is put up against the increasing number of harmful and toxic substances in the environment. Toxins come in many forms: pesticides in produce, formaldehyde in carpets and cosmetics, PCBs from plastic containers, dioxins from bleached paper products, and more.

Your body will process and eliminate some of the hordes of chemicals that enter, but overflow gets stored in the liver, lungs, kidneys, fat cells, intestines, blood stream, and skin—which can result in chronic illnesses down the road. When you undergo a detox, you get these toxins out of your system.

How do you know if you need a detox?
You know you’re suffering from toxic overload if you are experiencing fatigue, memory decline, difficulty focusing, allergies and infections, irritability, anxiety and depression, difficulty with weight gain and weight loss, muscle and joint pain or weakness, skin rashes and outbreaks, recurrent yeast and fungal infections, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, and indigestion.

Most people report vast improvement in their symptoms after a detox. At first, you may feel a little fuzzy because of the toxins being released. However, when you stick with it, you will begin to feel more alert, energized, and full of vitality.

At-Home Detox
Start small! Begin with a one-day program and gradually increase to one week or more. Here are 5 steps to a daily detox that will gently cleanse your body:

1. Start the Detox Day Right
• First thing in the morning, drink one lemon squeezed in 12 ounces of warm filtered water. Lemon activates your liver to release toxins and helps to cleanse and move the roughage that stays behind in your intestines.

• Take acidophilus or a probiotic supplement. Acidophilus is one of the many “good” bacteria and yeasts known as the probiotics. Probiotics balance our intestinal functions, helping to break down food and control the “bad” bacteria that is also in your system—all of which optimizes the detoxification process. Always take probiotics on an empty stomach.

2. Your Detox Meals
These meals are designed to jump-start your body into becoming healthier.
• Breakfast: Eat oat bran cereal, brown rice, or any other whole grain cereal as long as it is unbleached and does not contain any added sugar or chemicals. Pair with unflavored soy milk.

• Lunch or Dinner: Eat any combination of beans, brown rice, oat bran, vegetables, and organic chicken, turkey, or soy-products. When you eat, notice how your food affects you. You should feel satisfied and energized. If you feel tired and sluggish, try eating smaller meals so that you don’t overwhelm your digestion and interfere with the detoxification process.

3. Eat Green to Spring into Health
The green pigment in plants, chlorophyll, is structurally similar to the hemoglobin in the human body—the iron-containing element in blood. It increases red blood cell production and improves oxygenation, detoxification, and circulation. Be sure to eat several servings of fresh green vegetables every day during your detox. Try this super-cleansing broth and juice as a quick way to up your veggie intake.

Detox Broth: Add as many of these ingredients as you can into a large pot of filtered water: collards, Swiss chard, kale, mustard greens, cabbage, dandelion, Brussels sprouts, daikon radish, watercress, seaweed, shitake mushrooms, cilantro, garlic, leeks, fresh fennel, anise, fresh ginger, and turmeric. Boil until all ingredients are soft. You can make in a large batch and refrigerate for up to three days.

Detox Juice: Juice the following together: Aloe vera juice (which can be found in most health food stores), apples, asparagus, beets (including greens), cabbage, carrot and carrot greens, celery, cucumbers, and parsley. You can also purchase vegetable juice from the store, but be sure that it has no added salt or chemicals.

4. Supplement Your Detox
• Take a daily supplement of 1 tablespoon of flax seed oil, walnut oil, or deep-sea fish oil.

• Green Tea is a strong antioxidant, and a great beverage choice for your detox.  Be sure to drink decaffeinated green tea.

• Dandelion and Milk Thistle both protect and restore the liver. According to Chinese medicine, the liver is most active in the detoxification process during spring.

• Ginger is a bowel and kidney cleanser. Make yourself tea from fresh ginger root during your detox.

A popular herbal formula among my patients is Internal Cleanse, a special combination of natural herbs to detoxify, calm nerves, clear the mind, promote emotional balance, and ease digestion. For more information, click here.

5. Take an Invigorating Herbal Soak
Soak for 20 minutes in a revitalizing herbal bath. Help draw out toxins by infusing your bath water with eucalyptus, wintergreen, peppermint, fennel, cinnamon, and epsom salts.

Spring may be the best time to cleanse your body, but you don’t have to wait until spring to start. Detoxification and cleansing is a healthy maintenance program for all seasons.

May you stay healthy, live long, and live happy!

How to avoid ACNE?

Monday, October 27th, 2008

DRINK LEMON JUICE: It’s really effective.. I recommend starting the day with one glass of hot water and lemon juice from 1 lemon. I’ve been doing this for 2 weeks and my acne is almost gone. My tip is that you wait at least 30 min after finishing the hot lemon juice before eating breakfast, to give the lemon time to remove dirt and sh*t from your liver, etc.

Drink water, eat less fat and sugar, eat more fruits and vegetables, avoid alcohol consumption and exciting food. And the law of life, adequate sleep, good mood, should develop good health habits, good personal hygiene, it is necessary to frequently wash with warm water to keep pores open.

What your face 2-3 times a day depending on your skin type. Make sure that you do not over dry your face. Washing your face a lot will dry it out, which will in turn cause your skin to produce more sebum, which will make your face more oily and cause it to get worse. Drink orange juice before you wash your face. It opens up the pores so it’s easier to get the oil out and other stuff. Washing your face does help a lot to fight acne and blackheads. Soap does not though. It dries out your skin. The only soap that works is soap made especially for your face. That won’t dry your skin out.

Your skin has essential oils and nutrients in it which protect it from harmful sun, chemicals and other elements. Washing all the protection away leaves your most delicate skin open for attack. Drying your face out by over-washing also leads to breakouts because there is no oil in your pores protecting them from harm. You can (and likely will) suffer sun damage and possibly skin cancers to the face if you wash away all the protective barriers.

Dermatologist suggest not to wash your face more than 2 times a day.
